Abstract

Background: Traumatic wounds constitute a global public health problem, representing a high proportion of emergency department visits. When wounds are clean and involve minimal tissue loss, immediate primary intention closure is the preferred approach, utilizing techniques such as sutures, biological or synthetic adhesives, and adhesive strips. However, the diversity of practices and the lack of systematization hinder the standardization of care and clinical decision-making.

Objetive: This study aims to identify, map, and categorize the treatments currently used in the acute phase of traumatic wounds healing by primary intention, in order to promote the standardization of clinical practices and the optimization of therapeutic outcomes.

Methods: A scoping review will be conducted according to the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology and reported in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The search will be carried out across international databases, including MEDLINE, CINAHL, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, ProQuest, and Google Scholar, with no time restrictions. Studies in Portuguese, English, and Spanish involving participants of all ages with traumatic wounds treated by primary intention will be included. Two independent reviewers will perform study selection, data extraction, and descriptive synthesis.

Results: This scoping review is expected to map the techniques and materials used in the closure of traumatic wounds, systematizing their indications and contraindications according to current evidence. It aims to identify the healthcare professionals qualified to perform these techniques and the contexts in which they are applied. The results will contribute to identifying knowledge gaps, supporting the development of standardized clinical protocols, and optimizing decision-making, aiming for improved aesthetic and functional outcomes, as well as patient safety.

Conclusions: This review will help clarify and standardize therapeutic approaches in the immediate closure of traumatic wounds, contributing to the improvement of the quality, safety, and consistency of care provided.
