Non-pharmacological intervencions used by nurses in the management of pain in the postoperative period: a qualitative study

Background: Pain causes physical discomfort and significantly impacts the emotional and psychosocial well-being of individuals, affecting their quality of life. In the postoperative period, promoting comfort through proper pain management resulting from tissue and/or organic injuries is a key focus for nurses.
Objective(s): This study aims to highlight the autonomous nursing interventions in the monitoring, control, and management of postoperative pain. The specific objectives are: to characterize nurses' attitudes towards non-pharmacological interventions in pain management/control; and to describe the perceived advantages and disadvantages of using non-pharmacological interventions in postoperative pain management/control.
Methods: A descriptive and exploratory qualitative study was conducted, using a purposive sample of seven participants. Data collection was carried out through two Focus Group sessions, analyzed using Laurence Bardin’s content analysis technique.
Results: Pain assessment can be improved during the initial evaluation. Among the non-pharmacological interventions, participants most frequently mentioned positioning, massage, and cryotherapy. The limited implementation of these interventions is attributed to cognitive, physical, and human resource constraints. Reported advantages include enhanced nursing communication, cost reduction, ease of application, and active participation of the person in pain. As a product of this study, an instrument (Algorithm/Checklist) was developed, listing non-pharmacological interventions used in postoperative pain management.
Conclusions: This instrument may promote and encourage the standardization of clinical practices, highlighting the importance of autonomous nursing interventions in managing acute postoperative pain. It is concluded that these interventions are always used in conjunction with pharmacological methods; however, their benefits should not be overlooked.
