Background: The involvement of the cared-for Person during nursing shift handover has been increasingly studied and adopted as a methodology with positive effects on communication effectiveness and safety.
Objective: To map the scientific evidence regarding the areas of impact of Person-centred nursing shift handover in critical care settings.
Methodology: Scoping review following the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology. The search was conducted in PUBMED, CINAHL, SCOPUS, and SCIELO databases, from January 2019 to March 2024, in Spanish, Portuguese, and English.
Results: Eight studies were included in the scoping review. Findings highlight that Person-centred nursing shift handover in critical care impacts the nursing team—particularly in the quality of the information conveyed—as well as the patient and the organization of care.
Conclusion: The results support Person-centred nursing shift handover in critical care as a methodology that generates positive outcomes in the quality of transmitted information. However, concerns remain regarding privacy and confidentiality.
