tracheostomy, airway management, decontamination, critical careAbstract
Background: Effective care in cleaning and disinfecting of the tracheostomy inner cannula is essential for preventing complications, particularly infection or airway obstruction. However, the scientific evidence on this topic remains scarce, fragmented, and poorly systematized.
Objetive: The objective of this scoping review is to identify and map the available scientific evidence regarding the interventions for cleaning the inner tracheostomy cannula in the hospital setting, thereby enabling the development of a descriptive synthesis of the state of the art on this procedure.
Methods: In the first phase, a search will be conducted limited to MEDLINE (PubMed) and CINAHL (EBSCO), followed by a second search, without time restrictions, in the most relevant electronic databases in the field of health. Studies published and unpublished in English, French, Spanish, and Portuguese will be included. Data extraction will be independently performed by two reviewers in tabular format, in accordance with the review’s research questions. A narrative summary will accompany the tabulated results, describing how these findings relate to the objectives of the review.
